- "That loud guy who talks to himself about games as if somebody's listening!"
- ―Chuggaaconroy
Emiliano Rodolfo "Emile" Rosales-Birou (born April 8, 1990), better known by his online alias Chuggaaconroy or Chugga for short, is an American YouTuber, internet personality, and Let's Player. He is known for his high production values, regular update schedule, lighthearted and mostly family-friendly approach to games, his propensity for catchphrases and running gags, his impressive lung capacity, his hilariously bad puns, and overblown reactions to things that happen throughout his playthroughs. Contrasting from other Let’s Play channels, Emile's content focuses on playing games several years after their initial release dates, mainly of titles he has played numerous times before. He reached 1 million subscribers and 760 million views in 2015, and has 1.25 million subscribers and 1.24 billion views as of 2024.
Emile created his YouTube account in 2006, and began his career in 2008 with a Let's Play of EarthBound. For the next fifteen years, he made comprehensive walkthrough Let's Plays on various video games, the majority of which have been released on Nintendo platforms, including titles from the Mother, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Kirby, Pokémon and Xenoblade Chronicles video game franchises. Emile commentates in an informative manner in his videos with the purpose of guiding viewers to complete the game themselves. Emile's channel grew in popularity as his gameplay videos were often recommended on YouTube's suggestions. After more than two years of making Let's Plays, Emile became a YouTube Partner in 2010, and after becoming a Let’s Play creator on YouTube as a full-time job in 2013, he continued making Let's Plays for the following eleven years.
Alongside his own Let's Plays, Emile was one of the three founding members of the collab channel The Runaway Guys, alongside Johnathan Wheeler (Proton Jon) and Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun), who did 46 Collab LPs and reached 487 thousand subscribers and 397 total video views as of 2023. As of February 2024, the group's main projects are on indefinite hiatus due to controversies surrounding Emile that made it impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however, Jon has confirmed that Thrown Controllers and Colosseum will continue under different branding. In March 2024, Jon revealed that colosseum has been rebranded as Thrown Controllers Colosseum. In a reply to a tweet mentioning the core group being split, Jon said that Emile is working on himself, and encouraged Jon and Tim to move forward while that happened. Time will tell how everything shakes out, but Jon revealed that he's not as worried as he was at first. Emile also did collaborations with other Let's Players, including Stephen Georg and several Runaway Guys guest stars.
In 2024, Emile was accused of online sexual harassment by a YouTuber. This was followed by other allegations, including evidence of sexual online chat with a 15-year-old when he was 19. Following these allegations, both the Chuggaaconroy channel and the Runaway Guys went on an indefinite hiatus, with Emile staying with his girlfriend for a few months until the heat cools down. He wants to make a statement when he gets back, but that could be as much as a year from now.
Early life
Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou was born on April 8, 1990 and is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He is of French and Mexican descent. Emile has mentioned that he was poor as a child.[1][2] When he was younger, his mothers' nickname for him was Mimikins. Emile hated his real name as a kid and wanted to be called Steve. In sixth grade, a girl who hated Emile falsely claimed he sexually harassed her; at the time, Emile didn't even know what the term "sexually harassed" meant.[3]
Emile’s father left his family when Emile was young. In his Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Let’s Play, Emile makes he clear his father was emotionally and possibly physically abusive to Emile with him saying that it caused him to fear for his life when he was very young, and when Emile did finally cut him out of his life his father multiple times tried to gaslight and victim blame Emile to think that he was a terrible person for cutting him out of his life, attempts that failed and only made Emile cutting his father out an easier choice and reaffirms that it was the right decision.
Emile studied statistics in college, but it is unknown whether he minored or majored in it, however. The first three games Emile played were Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Wars Episode I: Racer and Banjo-Kazooie. He later became a fan of his favourite video game franchise, the Pokémon series, which got him into RPGs.[3] Emile has also cited Paper Mario as one of the most important games to his childhood.[3] An EarthBound fan, which prior to the release of Xenoblade Chronicles was his favourite video game, Emile had been a member of the EarthBound community fan-site starmen.net as a teenager, where he became friends with fellow content creator Stephen Georg (StephenPlays/StephenVlog) in 2005, and also became friends with Toby Fox. He later befriended Jules Conroy (FamilyJules).
Career
Let's Play career
- "Hey, everybody! It's Chuggaaconroy!"
- ―Emile at the beginning of almost every single Let's Play video he makes
Emile created his YouTube account on July 26, 2006 under the alias of "Chuggaaconroy". He got the name from a random name generator on a Cartoon Planet website; his username was originally "Chugga A. Conroy" before he changed it to "Chuggaaconroy".[4] In 2007, just as the Let's Play format was getting popular, Emile found he really enjoyed watching videos of Ninja Gaiden and Kaizo Mario World by Jonathan Wheeler (Proton Jon), with Emile later citing Jon as his biggest inspiration for making videos. On March 16, 2008, Emile uploaded his first video, a handheld recorded video of a Super Smash Bros. Brawl replay, entitled "Super Smash Bros. Brawl Boss Very Hard Clear".
On March 26, 2008, Emile began his first Let's Play; EarthBound, releasing its first episode "EarthBound - Part 1: Meteor". Emile started out doing exclusively RPGs such as EarthBound, Mother 1, Paper Mario, Mother 3, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but beginning with Super Mario Sunshine, he started doing other genres as well, such as platformers. Emile's Let's Play series of Super Mario Sunshine became by far the most popular of his LPs and helped boost Emile's popularity, alongside several other successful LPs he released around this time, including his LPs of Pokémon FireRed and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Around this time Emile became affiliated with Bulbapedia and Zelda Universe.
His channel further grew in popularity as his gameplay videos were often recommended on YouTube's suggestions. Back when video replies were allowed on YouTube, he had a lot of fan interactions then when challenging someone in-video to do certain gameplay content a certain way or better. Many of his earlier videos seem to lack much of his trademark enthusiasm—he's much quieter and speaks in a much less high-pitched, more deadpan voice. In earlier Let's Plays, Emile tended to mash through and talk over story content (dialogue, cutscenes, etc.) while being generally dismissive of what was going on. Emile has cited the 11 minute time limit that YouTube had at the time as the reason for this.
In 2010, after more than two years at making Let's Plays, Emile became a YouTube Partner, which was unprecedented among Let's Players at the time (multiple others have since become partners), due to the legal "gray area" that showing game footage entails. In July of 2010, Emile was suspended under false copyright claims weeks after Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun) also had his account suspended for the same reason.[5] Emile responded by submitting counter-claims to the vandals that took down his account with false claims, by doing this, he was able to negate the effects of their claims. A month later, Emile had his account restored, as did Tim.[6] The temporary suspension led to Emile's channel getting further attention after it was reported on multiple websites including Zelda Universe, ironically doing him more good than harm in the end. Successful LPs he released around this time include Pokémon Crystal, Ōkami, Super Luigi Galaxy, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 2, and Super Paper Mario, while Ōkamiden was the first Let's Play to feature his iconic Cc logo. After he became a YouTube Partner and could upload longer videos, Emile started reading through dialogue completely, and actually makes an effort to give the characters in the game good voices.
In 2013, Emile became a Let’s Play creator on YouTube as a full-time job[7], and for the following eleven years, continued making successful LPs including Xenoblade Chronicles, Pikmin 3, Pokémon Black & White, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Pokémon Black 2 & White 2. He also made two redux Let's Plays, EarthBound in 2018 and Paper Mario in 2023, which contain more background informing than the original LPs. Emile reached 1 million subscribers and 760 million views in 2015, and has 1.25 million subscribers and 1.24 billion views as of 2024.
For his channel's tenth anniversary, Emile made a two-hour long video titled "Creating a Let's Play: What You've Taught Me", where he goes over his process for making let's plays.[3] He would also do a redux of his first Let's Play, EarthBound, for that same anniversary. In June 2021, five episodes of this redux Let's Play made by Emile got blocked by the Japanese division of Sony Music because of the game's soundtrack, which they own the distribution rights to.[8][9][10][11] Emile lost his redux EarthBound LPs’ ad revenue and five of his videos from the redux LP were removed.[12][13] Emile had filed requests to get the videos restored, and they were restored a week later on July 3rd 2021 after Jirard The Completionist helped Emile get in touch with some people who could deal with the problem.[14]
In 2024, Emile's career came to an abrupt pause after he began going on hiatus for an indefinite amount of time since the end of his Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Let's Play in January of that year, as a result of the controversy surrounding the allegations of online sexual harassment against him. The Chuggaaconroy channel went on an indefinite hiatus following the allegations, with Emile staying with his girlfriend for a few months until the heat cools down. He wants to make a statement when he gets back, but that could be as much as a year from now.
Commentary and video style
As a Let's Player, Emile is known for his high production values, regular update schedule, lighthearted and mostly family-friendly approach to games, his propensity for catchphrases and running gags, his impressive lung capacity, his hilariously bad puns, and overblown reactions to things that happen throughout his playthroughs. Contrasting from other Let’s Play channels, his content focuses on playing games several years after their initial release dates, mainly of titles he has played numerous times before. Every game he has LP'ed to date has been available on Nintendo's systems; with the exception of Ōkami, Ōkamiden, Sonic Colors, and Chrono Trigger, they've all been Nintendo first-party titles. He has played at least one game on every major Nintendo home console and handheld, including six on his personal favorite, the Nintendo GameCube.
Many of his earlier videos seem to lack much of his trademark enthusiasm; he's much quieter and speaks in a much less high-pitched, more deadpan voice. In earlier Let's Plays, Emile tended to mash through and talk over story content (dialogue, cutscenes, etc.) while being generally dismissive of what was going on. After he became a YouTube Partner and could upload longer videos, Emile started reading through dialogue completely, and actually makes an effort to give the characters in the game good voices.
Emile goes silent for non-dialogue moments in cutscenes with minimal aside commentary, giving the story focus in the game's context. Emile has also sometimes gone silent during memorable dialogue moments. For example, in Episode 49 of his Super Paper Mario Let's Play, Emile goes silent during the scene where Luvbi is told by her parents that she is the Pure Heart.[15]
With the exception of EarthBound and Mother 1, most of Emile's Let's Plays from 2008 to 2012 had no episode titles. Starting with Ōkamiden and Pokémon Colosseum, Emile would start giving his episodes titles again, partially as a way to add charm to the videos, and as a way to make more puns.
In his Let's Plays, Emile attempts to show every aspect of each individual game he plays to 100% completion, including every item, boss battle, sidequest, and Easter egg possible. Emile commentates in an informative manner in his videos with the purpose of guiding viewers to complete the game themselves. For example, in his Pokémon Emerald Let's Play he discusses various strategies and viable techniques to ensure optimal success in the game, in his redux EarthBound Let's Play he showcases a particular glitch in the game involving the Tent located in Threed, and in his redux Paper Mario Let's Play he showcases alternate methods of playing the game including Danger Mario, and also shows what every badge ability does in battle at least once. All of his Pokémon Let's Plays feature bios for all the Pokémon encountered in the games, as well as bios for the gym fights. In this regard, his gameplay videos function as informative walkthroughs with the premise of guiding players through each aspect of the specific game he plays.
In spite of their informative nature, Emile’s Let's Play videos often employ humorous moments in his gameplay, such as the occasional failure or death in a level and subsequent backtracking. His videos have also been described as nostalgic and reflective, as he often tells personal anecdotes of his experiences with the games he plays.
In his fifth anniversary video, Emile reveals that he personally thinks his early Lets Plays suck, mainly because he was so afraid to be himself back then. The fact that he was limited to only ten minute videos at the time forced Emile to rush through games, in stark contrast to the more in-depth playthroughs that attempt to show off everything they had to offer that he's since become known for. The playlist description for his Mother LP explicitly singles it out as his least favorite LP.
The Runaway Guys
- "When making a brand new collaborative Let's Play channel, a lot of things need to be done. First of all, you've got to be sure you pick a first game that's sure to bring out the frustration in everybody! The next thing is to make sure that your recording equipment can take the loudness associated with such frustration! Next, you have to think of a clever name for the whole channel."
- ―Emile in the video "Introducing... TheRunawayGuys!"
Emile was a founding member of The Runaway Guys, a collab channel with Johnathan Wheeler (Proton Jon) and Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun). Emile was in charge of maintaining the channel, although Jon made posts and comments for the channel as well. For the first two years, updates usually only occurred every Saturday, but this was changed to Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday following an announcement on February 8, 2013. Videos for Mario Party games (starting with the third) and Fortune Street were also posted daily (each board beginning on Saturday and continuing every day until its end).
Their first Let's Play premiered on February 5, 2011. The three of them were the only ones participating, but many of their later videos featured additional players. From the creation of the channel in 2011 to it going on indefinite hiatus in 2024, 46 main collab LPs were produced, along with five side collab LPs and six tournament LPs. Along with their official long-running LPs, they did one-shot filler LPs (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually update and use as filler between regular projects.
On occasion at various conventions, the Runaway Guys had their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, a live game show which focused on video game trivia and challenges. The event was broadcast on numerous gaming conventions such as PAX, Magfest and Momocon. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it has been done since. Many prizes were awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch.
In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. With the combined efforts of the community, event staff, and the performers, a total over $1,000,000 was raised by 2023.
As of February 2024, the group's main projects are on indefinite hiatus due to controversies surrounding Emile that made it impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however, Jon has confirmed that Thrown Controllers and Colosseum will continue under different branding.[16][17] In March 2024, Jon revealed that colosseum has been rebranded as Thrown Controllers Colosseum. In a reply to a tweet mentioning the core group being split, Jon said that Emile is working on himself, and encouraged Jon and Tim to move forward while that happened. Time will tell how everything shakes out, but Jon revealed that he's not as worried as he was at first.[18]
Collaborations and Guest Appearances
Emile has collaborated with quite a few other YouTubers, including several guest stars of The Runaway Guys on their various Let's Plays. He has made several guest appearances, most notably by making regular appearances on Stephen Georg's vlog channel. Emile was also well known for his work with The Speed Gamers, even appearing live at their home base for two separate marathons.
While he worked with The Speed Gamers, Emile did speed-runs of games, such as EarthBound and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for marathons. He helped commentate a few times, and also had an account on the The Speed Gamers forums. He appeared on-camera during the Winter 2009 Pokémon Marathon, wearing a silver mask concealing his face. He helped out in the Mother/EarthBound marathon with The Speed Gamers, by doing a speed run of EarthBound, and attempting to break the world record. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he did not accomplish his goal. He attended the Mario Marathon on June 11, 2010 for The Speed Gamers, to raise money for ACT Today, where he took off his mask and showed his face to the public for the first time.
Some time after revealing (via Twitter) that he is a fan of the game commentary group Brain Scratch Commentaries, Emile has since met up with the quartet of un-professional commentators to do matches of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and co-commentating Super Mario Galaxy. Some have even guest starred on his own projects, with SomeCallMeJohnny joining him for the ScareScraper, and Ted being part of the (scrapped) Melee tournament on The Runaway Guys.
Emile made regular appearances on Stephen Georg's channel, and they appeared in each other's videos regularly. They first met each other on starmen.net in 2005 and used to talk on IM, and played Trickster, a Korean MMORPG, together for some time. At some point, Emile would ask Stephen for help in setting stuff up, like how to build a computer. He would also ask Stephen to watch through his work-in-progress LP episodes to get feedback, though Stephen didn't really understand what Let's Playing was at the time. As Stephen watched Emile develop as a Let's Player and saw his success, Stephen decided to try Let's Playing himself in February 2011. At that point, Stephen got a lot of help and advice about LPing from Emile, who by that time had three years of LP experience. In the years since then, Emile and Stephen continued to help each other considerably. Emile helped to push viewers to StephenVlog by featuring Stephen on his channel (for Pikmin 2 Challenge Mode) and appearing in the vlogs. He also made several appearances on StephenPlays, such as the Mario Party Boards and Mario Party series, You're In The Movies, the Splatoon First20, and in the last episode of Pokémon LeafGreen. He also gave them a multitude of gifts, including a 3DS, an Xbox One, a Wii U, two Nintendo Switches, and one of the rarest GameCube game. On the other hand, Stephen and Mallory helped Emile by designing his iconic Cc logo and made a new one for each LP starting with his Ōkamiden Let's Play in 2012, and continued to make graphics for his Let's Play videos until 2022. They were also responsible for designing the current Runaway Guys logo. Stephen also helped Emile put together his audio setup. Starting from 2013 and continuing until 2020, Stephen and Mal continued to visit Emile every year in either December or January to spend time with each other and exchange presents. Emile and Stephen did several collaborations, including a two-part Pokémon Quiz ("Name That Pokémon!" with Chuggaaconroy and "Name That Pokémon!" PART 2! with Chuggaaconroy).
From 2014 to 2021, Emile did several collaborations with fellow Let's Player Shauntelle Kikue (MasaeAnela), on both their channels and also on The Runaway Guys and Stephen Georg's vlogs. A lot of people thought that Emile and Masae were dating because Emile often made sexual and flirtatious comments about her in videos they did together. Unbeknownst publicly at the time, Masae was uncomfortable at the sexual and flirtatious comments Emile made about her. Masae stopped talking to Emile sometime after or during June 2021 when she made a post on twitter that Emile commented on and she responded. During this time her channel was under a long hiatus from about May to August 2021, mostly because she was on a vacation. However, someone mentioned she would return by July but did not return until August. In the video that she uploaded when she came back, in the comments she mentions mostly that she was sick but also on a “roller coaster” of a journey and was doing better now. Most likely she delayed her return due to not only being sick but dealing with her own situation with Emile. By the time Emile's Splatoon 2 Let's Play was being uploaded, Masae was no longer friends with Emile and wished to sever any affiliation with him. Instead, the videos featuring her were uploaded without Masae’s consent, perpetuating the idea the two were still friends for almost two years. Assumptions of a falling out between Emile and Masae occurred because of the lack of social media interaction between them in the past year or two.
Emile collaborated with several other YouTubers and Let's Players in his Pikmin 3 Mission Mode series, including Stephen Georg, Proton Jon, NintendoCapriSun, Lucahjin, ProJared, Jirard The Completionist, Yoshiller and MasaeAnela. He collaborated with Pokémon YouTuber Marriland on the now unlisted series Chugga & Marriland In DisastORAS!!. In 2008-09, Emile did a podcast with SonikDude (now AntDude on YouTube) called the Warpzone.
In July 2022, Emile joined fellow Pokémon streamers Partyarlie, Ajentvee, and Bryand as contestants on The4thGenGamer's Speedrun Survivor series. He was coached by PulseEffect and they ultimately won the challenge. Their complete run was not shown in the Speedrun Survivor series itself, as The4thGenGamer announced after the seventh episode that the series in its intended form would be cancelled, but later released a condensed version of the series in one video, which revealed that Emile and PulseEffect won the challenge. Like the other contestants and coachers, Emile was interviewed throughout the series on several occasions; his complete interviews were later released on The4thGenGamer's Patreon account. PulseEffect later released a video of his and Emile's run.
In December 2022, Emile collaborated with YouTubers JaidenAnimations, Alpharad, and ScottFalco on a video where they played Splatoon 3. Emile lent Jaiden his DS capture card for her video on Fossil Fighters, with Jaiden giving him a shout-out at the end of the video The Most Underrated Game Ever for his generosity.
Controversies
2010 suspension
- Main article: 2010 Chuggaaconroy Suspension Controversy
In July 2010, Emile was suspended under false copyright claims.[5] The videos that Emile received false copyright claims for were three episodes of his Pokémon Crystal LP and one episode of his Super Mario Sunshine LP. The person or group of people went around YouTube reporting videos for false copyright violations under false names (like Timothy Bishop, the real name of NintendoCapriSun), sometimes affiliated themselves with large companies like Nintendo. For instance, one of Emile’s videos was taken down by a user who claimed to own the copyrights to the Pokémon franchise, while another was taken down by a user who claimed ownership over Emile’s voice.
Emile responded by submitting counter-claims to the vandals that took down his account with false claims, by doing this, he was able to negate the effects of their claims. On 1st August 2010, Emile had his account restored.[6] The temporary suspension led to Emile's channel getting further attention after it was reported on multiple websites including Zelda Universe, ironically doing him more good than harm in the end.
2021 EarthBound video copyright takedowns
- Main article: 2021 EarthBound Copyright Claims Controversy
In June 2021, five episodes of the EarthBound redux Let's Play made by Emile got blocked by the Japanese division of Sony Music because of the game's soundtrack, which they own the distribution rights to.[8][9][10][11] Emile lost his redux EarthBound LPs’ ad revenue and five of his videos from the redux LP, including the 31st episode entitled EarthBound - Episode 31: Siding with the Man, were removed.[12][13] Emile had filed requests to get the videos restored, and they were restored a week later on July 3rd 2021 after Jirard The Completionist helped Emile get in touch with some people who could deal with the problem.[14]
2024 allegations
- Main article: 2024 Chuggaaconroy Allegations
Throughout January 2024, a controversy surrounding allegations of online sexual harassment against Emile took place on Twitter. The controversy began after Lady Emily came forward with allegations that Emile had persistently attempted to initiate erotic foot fetish roleplay with her despite her disinterest, in response to a Reddit post related to YouTube drama.[19] [20] While Emile did make a full apology on the matter several days later[21] [22][23][24][25], the controversy only gained more traction when several of his former friends, most notably MasaeAnela, came forth with their own allegations of uncomfortable behavior on his part.[26] [27] [28] [29] [30] This was followed by evidence of sexual online chat with a 15-year-old when he was 19.[31] [32]
Personal life
Emile has mentioned in videos that he struggled with family and financial issues during his childhood, as well as with autism. For a short period of time, he believed he was misdiagnosed. However, in his EarthBound remake series he later backed down from that statement, having no evidence to disprove it. In adolescence, Emile developed a fear of roller coasters due to being next in line for the Big Thunder Mountain coaster when it derailed in 2003, killing someone.[33][34][35] As of 2024, Emile resides in Scotland; he previously lived in Atlanta, Georgia from 2019 to 2023. Emile intentionally avoids talking about politics on his channel.[36]
Emile had several pets, including four cats named Kirby, Teddy, Jak and Loki, and a rabbit named Pippy. Of these pets, Kirby was his longest lived and was around for most of his career.[37][38][39][40] Kirby, Teddy and Pippy appeared regularly in his videos, while Jak was mentioned in the video "Fifty Facts About Chuggaaconroy-Tag Video" and Loki was mentioned in a tweet Emile made in 2023.
In his day-to-day life, Emile tends to follow a pretty straightforward and rigid schedule. He goes to the gym on a frequent basis to psyche himself up for recording and even hired a personal trainer, he neatly organizes his video game and merchandise collections, he tends to his pets at precise times (prior to their passing), and he tends to frequent the same restaurants over and over again (notably Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings). Emile does spice things up with his eccentric personality, but as stated in his Animal Crossing: New Leaf LP on his birthday, this routine makes him feel happy and accomplished.
Aside from YouTube, Emile is active on Facebook and Twitter, among other social media sites. He has more than 108k Facebook fans and more than 258k Twitter followers. On Twitter, he regularly talks about video games and interacts with his followers. In addition, he uploads and advertises channel-related content using his presence. Using his influence, he also promotes sponsors and products.[41]
On an EarthBound-centric podcast, Emile told the story about his first girlfriend, back in high school. She was a huge EarthBound fan, but she wasn't the nicest person, and the relationship turned sour. Emile's best friend at the time decided to try to find out what was going on, and he found out the only reason she was dating Emile was to impress Toby Fox.
In a Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 playthrough episode on August 2023, Emile mentioned that he was in a relationship and had been playing the game with his girlfriend off-screen, albeit her identity was not revealed.[42]
In his first few years, Emile never showed his face, except for one video he posted about wanting to see EarthBound on Virtual Console, when he was uploading his first playthrough of EarthBound, although he took it down shortly after and kept his face a mystery for newer subscribers. But he eventually subverted this after his appearance on The Speed Gamers. Nowadays, while he still acts shy while on camera, he's no longer afraid to show his face.
Since 2021, Emile has been housemates with Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun) in Georgia. Whenever he visited Emile in the past, Tim typically stayed in a messy spare room where Emile keeps old consoles and other classic stuff. Tim visited Emile for a couple weeks in 2021, because he had just found out that Kirby (his cat) had kidney failure and he thought the cat only had a few weeks left, and he wanted to be there for Emile for that. In the end, Kirby lived almost a whole another year. At the time he moved into Emile's house, Tim was going through some health problems, and when Emile saw what a state Tim was in, he let him live in his house and urged Tim to a clinic and he took him to the gym, which led to Tim's health greatly improving.
On New Year's Day 2024, Emile posted a statement in which that he'd like to "break new ground and do more individual things" and that he's "hopeful we’ve reached the end of hard times for a while".[43][44][45][46] Following the allegations two weeks later, both the Chuggaaconroy channel and the Runaway Guys went on an indefinite hiatus, with fellow creators who remained in contact with Emile commenting that he had been getting therapy prior to the allegations coming out, had also checked himself into a psych ward at some point during the height of the controversy, and was keeping away from the online space under doctor's orders.[47][48] As of February 2024, Emile is staying with his girlfriend for a few months until the heat cools down. He wants to make a statement when he gets back, but that could be as much as a year from now.[49]
Games that Emile has Let's Played
From starting out on YouTube in 2008 to his hiatus for an indefinite amount of time in 2024, Emile completed 48 Let's Play series. His first Let's Play was his original EarthBound LP that aired from March to June of 2008, and his most recent Let's Play was Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 that aired from 2023 to 2024.
Emile created his YouTube account in 2008, and began his career with a Let's Play of EarthBound. Every game that Emile did a Let's Play of has been available on Nintendo's systems. He played at least one game on every major Nintendo home console and handheld, including six on his personal favourite, the Nintendo GameCube.
Thus far, Emile has LPed ten Mario-related games: four of the main-series platformers (Super Mario 64 DS with some parts of the N64 game included, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy played as Luigi and thus referred to as "Super Luigi Galaxy", and the long-awaited Super Mario Galaxy 2), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, three of the Paper Mario games (Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario), two of the Mario & Luigi series (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time), and spin-off game Luigi's Mansion and its sequel, Dark Moon.

While telling us we must go back to working full-time immediately before even spending time with our own family whom we never thought we'd see again, because we spent last month marooned on a distant planet with only 30 days worth of breathable air, and had to go back to this forsaken planet to do our job for god knows how long. You think I have friends to go see? You think I have places to go hang out? You think I have dates to go on? You think I have sex to have? Your grunts told me what you were doing and where you would be and you told me where you were taking what you were stealing and where I could confront you, and even asked me if I would. What is wrong with you?! Maxie might have the stupidest voice, but at least he's not that stupid!"
- "Okay, so last video: There's something I wanted to address because I was called out on two things by you, the viewers. First thing is entirely my fault. I typed up Beautifly's name as "Beautiful." I make mistakes, I deserved to be called out on it. Thank you for pointing that out. Second though, I really need to address. [Talking very fast] It was when I said that Wurmple evolves at random. I received hundreds upon hundreds of comments trying to educate me that it depends on gender, time of day, or some other not-random factor. I am here to disprove this because it is not dependent on gender but on personality value. Gender is only one of four integers that make up a Pokémon's personality value. This is a 32-bit value between 0 and 4,294,967,295, represented in binary, that was introduced in Generation III, one generation after gender was implemented for Pokémon other than Nidoran. Breaking down how this works, Wurmple's evolution depends on the last two bytes of this integer, only one of which decides the Pokémon's gender. It is determined by taking these numbers combined between the two bytes of memory, dividing them by 10, and seeing if the remainder is more or less than 5. If the remainder is less than 5, you get a Silcoon. If it is equal to or greater than 5, you get a Cascoon. There's many player's guides floating around out there that have this detail wrong, so I can understand why you would think otherwise. But if you're gonna try to correct me, please get your facts straight before you do, otherwise, I CAN AND WILL NERD OUT ON YOU. But, what do I know? I can't even spell "Beautifly" right!"
- "The day of this video getting uploaded... is March 2- is uh, March 19; recording this pretty far in advance. But, this day has signficance. This is the ninth anniversary of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire being released in North America, and as such I am going to- [Groudon gets into a Nest Ball at almost full health] Oh my god! OH MY GOD! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! WHERE YOU AT?! ...I've lost man points, heavily."
- "YOU SON OF A CANADIAN!"
- "Uh-huh, I'm such a loser... " (Normally after making an awkward statement.)
- "Lord Arceus from above!." (Most Pokémon LPs)
- "END OF CHAPTER!" (Paper Mario Let's Plays) (pronounced "CHEEEAPTEER!!!")
- "D'oh, I missed!" (Every series since the Mario Party Runaway Guys Collaboration)
- "WHERE YOU AT?!" (Said when something incredible happens, such as catching Groudon in a Nest Ball, or finding a Hidden Block in Mario Party)
- "For the sheer fact."
- "Whatever."
- "You jerk!" (when a Pokémon Trainer uses a Potion or a healing technique when the Pokémon is almost knocked out)
- "Should we do Daisy on Hard?"
- "I'm inside Daisy's heart shaped box."
- "Shut up" (Most LPs)
- "So yeah"
- "Haw-haw!"
- "Die" (Used many different ways)
- "Speaking of-"
- "So, did you get all that? Trivia
- Emile says outright he's playing certain games because he personally loves them and wants more fans to either know about the game, or convince his fans to give the game a second chance to impress them. Most of the time, this works, with many people even admitting to playing along with him or deciding to replay it after watching his LPs.
- Emile's game collection is ordered alphabetically and by platform.
- Emile says outright he's playing certain games because he personally loves them and wants more fans to either know about the game, or convince his fans to give the game a second chance to impress them. Most of the time, this works, with many people even admitting to playing along with him or deciding to replay it after watching his LPs. The ones listed here are just a selection of many.
- Ōkami in particular got a lot more sales after he started playing it. Coincidentally, Ōkamiden was released near the end of his series, and likely gained popularity thanks to the first game's new fanbase.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 1 gained a much higher profile after Emile began his LP, which was exasperated when Shulk was announced for Super Smash Bros. 4 during the LP's hiatus.
- In general, Emile tends to have a low opinion on his LPs of video games that have since been remade, as they now appear outdated in contrast to whatever changes and/or new content the remakes have to offer.
- In his fifth anniversary video, Emile reveals that he personally thinks his early Lets Plays suck, mainly because he was so afraid to be himself back then. The fact that he was limited to only ten minute videos at the time forced Emile to rush through games, in stark contrast to the more in-depth playthroughs that attempt to show off everything they had to offer that he's since become known for. The current playlist description for his Mother LP explicitly singles it out as his least favorite LP.
- Emile admitted in part 17 of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 that he regretted using Haywire the Zebstrika on his team in the first game. This is due to Haywire severely falling off in usefulness halfway through the game and learning the winner of the nickname contest had plagiarized their name and reasoning from another website.
- Emile is considered to a VIP for the fandoms of several games he plays, including Mother, Ōkami, and Xenoblade Chronicles.
- In March 2023, on the 15th anniversary of Emile's first Let's Play video "EarthBound - Part 1: Meteor" being uploaded, the YouTubeGaming Twitter page posted a tweet referencing the occasion, referring to Emile as a "now let's play legend."[51]
- Emile has mentioned that he was poor as a child.[1][2]
- Emile's favorite Pokémon Gen VII starter is Rowlet and his least favorite is Litten.[52]
- He has shown himself to be incredibly generous. For example, he once gave away 24 copies of Xenoblade Chronicles to his friends for Christmas in 2013 and he gave away 30 copies of the game for his viewers for a contest in his Xenoblade LP including four factory sealed ones.[53] This generosity is also shown in a few StephenVlogs videos, where we can see many of the gifts he has given to Stephen and Mal.
- Emile got the name "Chuggaaconroy" from a random name generator on a Cartoon Planet website.[54]
- Emile has hesitated on doing a Fire Emblem Let's Play due to its fanbase.[55]
- In May of 2012, Emile and Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun) visited a seven-year-old fan in Minnesota who was dying of cancer, because he wanted to be able to play a video game with Emile before he passed on.
- Emile's favorite Pokémon is Archen and its evolved form Archeops. This motivated him to use an Archen in Pokémon Black & White.[56]
- His favorite Pokémon before Gen V was Lucario, and before Gen IV it was Wartortle.[56]
- Emile voiced the Postman in Zelda Universe's 2020 dub of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.[57]
